Does the cheapest Cambodia eSIM mean weaker coverage?
In Cambodia that question carries real weight, more than it would on a dense city island. The strong national networks are Metfone and Cellcard, and how far your signal reaches around Angkor, out on the islands, or along the rural stretches depends on which carrier your eSIM rides. Airalo runs on Smart, Nomad and Holafly on Metfone, Ubigi on Metfone, and Saily on a network it does not name. Each one locks you to a single carrier.
Travelsim Asia includes Metfone and Cellcard, so the phone can use either included network where coverage is available. That may help on routes where their coverage differs, but it does not guarantee a signal in every location.
Value traps: when a low sticker is not the low price
- Plans that expire early. Airalo's cheapest 1 GB clears out after 3 days and its low 3 GB tier does the same. Its 5 GB and 10 GB have $12.00 and $19.50 versions that beat the 30-day prices on paper but run only 7 days. If the plan expires before your trip does, you're buying twice.
- Unlimited with a speed clause. Holafly is the one provider selling genuinely uncapped unlimited for Cambodia, priced by the day. Airalo and Ubigi also list unlimited plans, but their terms sit inside a fair-use policy that governs speed once you pass a daily threshold, so read that policy before you rely on it.
- Holafly's by-the-day maths. Selling only unlimited and pricing each day, Holafly reaches $73.90 for a 30-day stay. That fits a heavy daily streamer who wants no ceiling, and few other travellers in a country where guesthouse WiFi is common.
- The mid-trip rebuy. Running dry on a bus to Sihanoukville and grabbing a second eSIM in a rush is the costliest way to stay online. A plan you can top up in a browser with nothing to log into makes a small starter size a safe choice; you can always add more from your phone later.
