Japan eSIM guides: networks, prices and data for your trip

A Japan eSIM should cover your route, last your whole trip and leave enough data for the way you travel. Our nine Japan guides and customers’ data use help you compare networks, plan your allowance and decide when another option fits better.

  • Networks Our Japan plans include docomo, au, SoftBank and Rakuten
  • Two weeks 10 GB for moderate use; more for streaming or sharing
  • Short trip Ubigi offers 10 GB for $14, valid for seven days

Which networks should a Japan eSIM include?

For Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, compare the plan price and data allowance alongside its networks. For Hokkaido, mountain towns or rural stays, check coverage at your actual stops. Travelsim Asia includes NTT docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile, the only provider in this six-provider comparison listing all four. Ubigi includes docomo and au; Airalo, Nomad and Holafly list au and SoftBank.

Access to more networks gives a plan more connection options. It does not guarantee the strongest signal, uninterrupted train coverage or 5G at every stop. Operator maps are a planning aid; your device and roaming plan also affect service.

How much should you pay for a Japan eSIM?

Travelsim Asia starts at $3.49 for 1 GB over seven days. At 5, 10, 20 and 50 GB with 30-day validity, our price is one cent below Nomad’s: effectively the same cost. Nomad’s $7 plan gives 3 GB for 30 days, twice our 15-day validity for one cent more. For a data-heavy week, Ubigi’s 10 GB at $14 is cheaper than our $15.99 plan; ours lasts 30 days.

How much data do you need in Japan?

Our Japan customers typically used about 4.7 GB per trip. Short trips used around 1 GB a day; for a week or longer, that was closer to 0.7 GB. For a 12-day visit, budget about 8 GB. A 10 GB plan gives you a little room to spare.

Based on our customers’ Japan eSIM use from 2024 to mid-June 2026.

Is 10 GB enough for 15 days in Japan?

10 GB can cover 15 days of maps, translation, messaging and light social media if you use Wi-Fi for heavier tasks. It gives you about 667 MB a day, close to what our customers used on longer trips, with little spare. Choose 20 GB if you expect frequent video calls, streaming or shared data: our 20 GB plan is $22.99, $7 more than 10 GB.

Set photo backups to Wi-Fi and check consumption after the first few days. If you prefer to start smaller, Travelsim Asia supports top-ups on the same eSIM through your web portal. Heavy laptop use can require more than 20 GB.

When is unlimited data worth considering?

Compare unlimited plans if you expect several gigabytes of use every day. At 4 GB a day, a 15-day trip needs 60 GB, more than our largest single Japan plan. Ubigi lists 15-day unlimited at $39, Airalo at $48 and Saily at $48.99. Before choosing, check how much high-speed data is included, whether its limit resets daily, and how much you can share by hotspot.

Those USD prices are from 26 September 2026. “Unlimited” does not promise unlimited high-speed data or unrestricted tethering. The plans have different usage terms; a lower price alone does not establish better value. Travelsim Asia sells fixed data only.

Should you choose an eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi in Japan?

Choose an eSIM if each traveller needs a connection when the group splits up. Pocket Wi-Fi suits devices without eSIM support and families who will stay together and share one connection. Compare the rental’s total cost, data limits and pickup or return arrangements with separate eSIMs. A group of three or four does not automatically make a router cheaper.

Should you choose an eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi in Japan?
Your situationBetter starting point
Solo travel or separate daytime plansAn eSIM for each compatible phone
A family sharing tablets while staying togetherPocket Wi-Fi
Regular laptop useCompare a router with an eSIM that allows hotspot

A router needs charging, and everyone sharing it must stay within Wi-Fi range. Coverage depends on the mobile network behind either option.

How do you get connected when you land in Japan?

Before buying, check that your exact phone model supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install your Japan eSIM over Wi-Fi before departure using the instructions from your provider. With Travelsim Asia, the installation details arrive by email and you need no app or account. At Narita, Haneda or Kansai, enable the Japan line, select it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.

Our Japan eSIM is data-only, without a Japanese phone number or SMS service. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM and disable automatic mobile-data switching to avoid using that line for data abroad.

Choose from 1 to 50 GB for Japan, with all four listed networks and installation from your email.
