Malaysia eSIM guides: how to pick your Malaysian eSIM

For a week in Malaysia, our starting pick is 5 GB at $7.99 on Maxis and CelcomDigi. A lighter city break can fit 3 GB; at 10 GB, Ubigi has the lower price in our comparison. Use these guides to choose for Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi or a Sabah and Sarawak route.

  • Networks Maxis and CelcomDigi, the country's two largest
  • Setup No app, no account. Installs straight from the email
  • Running low Top up through the web portal, nothing to reinstall
  • Registration None for our eSIM. Local Malaysian SIMs need your passport

What is the best eSIM for Malaysia?

For a week in Malaysia using maps, Grab, WhatsApp and occasional uploads, we recommend Travelsim Asia 5 GB at $7.99 for 30 days on Maxis and CelcomDigi, with email installation and no app or account. For a lighter city break, choose 3 GB at $4.99 for 15 days. At 10 GB for 30 days, Ubigi is cheaper at $12 versus our $14.99 in the 26 September 2026 comparison.

Allowances are planning suggestions. Compare usage and validity as well as price. For Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore together, choose a plan covering all three; for wider routes, check the complete country list.

How much does a Malaysia eSIM cost?

Between $2.49 and $38, depending on how much data you buy. A week of normal use costs about $5 to $8. Travelsim Asia has the lowest price at 1, 3, 5, 20 and 50 GB. Ubigi is cheaper at 10 GB.

50 GB$37.99 / 30d$49.00 / 30dAiralo

Two things the table doesn't show. Ubigi sells 25 GB for $22.00, which is more data than our 20 GB for 51 cents more, so take that one if you want the headroom. And Airalo's 1 GB runs 3 days rather than 7, which is why it is poor value for anything longer than a stopover.

How much data do I need in Malaysia?

Start with 3 GB for a light city break, 5 GB for a week of maps, messaging and outings, or 10 GB for two weeks across several stops. These are planning suggestions. Regular video calls, streaming or laptop tethering may call for 20 GB or more. With Travelsim Asia, you can add data to the same eSIM through the web portal.

Which networks should you choose for your Malaysia route?

For a trip that includes Sabah, Sarawak or remote stops, we recommend checking Maxis and CelcomDigi coverage at the actual places you will stay. Our Malaysia eSIM lists both networks. Several competitors also include Maxis, and Nomad lists Maxis/Digi. Choose using your route, plan size and setup preference; a national network award cannot establish reception at a particular lodge.

Is an unlimited plan worth it in Malaysia?

Usually not, because fixed data is cheap here. We do not sell unlimited. If you want it, Nomad is cheapest at 5 and 10 days, and Ubigi at 7, 15 and 30 days.

For scale, our 20 GB runs a full 30 days at $21.49 with no daily cap. Two unlimited plans cost less outright, Nomad's 5-day at $18.00 and Ubigi's 7-day at $19.00, but both run out in a week or less. Holafly is the most expensive at every duration. Most soft-unlimited plans throttle after a daily allowance, so read the cap rather than the word.

Do I need an app or an account?

Travelsim Asia requires no app or account: installation arrives by email and top-ups use the linked web portal. Other providers offer their own app, website and installation flows. Check the instructions for your chosen plan; having an app does not necessarily mean it is required to install the eSIM.

Local Malaysian prepaid SIMs are a different matter. Under the MCMC rules in force since February 2026 you register in person with your original passport and visa, your hotel address goes on record, non-citizens are capped at two SIMs per provider, and the line is terminated after three months. A roaming eSIM is not a local SIM, so none of that applies to it.

Which eSIM should you use in Langkawi?

For a short Langkawi stay, we recommend Travelsim Asia’s Malaysia eSIM: 3 GB for $4.99 over 15 days on Maxis and CelcomDigi. For a week with more photo sharing, choose 5 GB for $7.99 over 30 days. At 10 GB for 30 days, Ubigi is cheaper at $12 versus our $14.99, with Maxis and YTL listed. One Malaysia plan can cover Langkawi and the mainland.
