Best eSIM for Langkawi: island coverage, data and onward travel

Our picks: Travelsim Asia at 3 GB and 5 GB, Ubigi at 10 GB. One Malaysia eSIM can cover Langkawi and the mainland.

For a short Langkawi stay, our pick is Travelsim Asia's 3 GB Malaysia eSIM at $4.99 for 15 days. It includes Maxis and CelcomDigi and installs from email without an app or account. For a week with more outings and uploads, we'd choose 5 GB at $7.99 for 30 days. At 10 GB, Ubigi is cheaper: $12 versus our $14.99, both for 30 days.

We sell these Malaysia plans, so our recommendation is not independent. You don't need an island-specific eSIM: one Malaysia allowance can cover Langkawi, Penang and Kuala Lumpur wherever its partner networks have service.

Which Langkawi eSIM should you buy?

  • Three or four days with Wi-Fi for video: Travelsim Asia, 3 GB for $4.99, valid for 15 days. A small starting allowance on Maxis and CelcomDigi.
  • A week with more room for photos: Travelsim Asia, 5 GB for $7.99, valid for 30 days. Check your usage and add data through the web portal if needed.
  • Need 10 GB? Ubigi's 30-day plan costs $12 and lists Maxis and YTL. It saves $2.99 against our 10 GB plan; choose it if that network selection suits your stay.
  • Need ordinary Malaysian calls? Compare Hotlink's local Travel SIM. Our eSIM is data only, without a Malaysian phone number.

Provider comparison: 26 September 2026. Prices in USD, excluding promotions. Allowances are planning suggestions, not measured Langkawi usage.

When would we choose something else?

At 10 GB for 30 days, Ubigi costs $12.00 in our 26 September comparison; our Malaysia plan costs $14.99. Ubigi lists Maxis and YTL, while ours lists Maxis and CelcomDigi. If Ubigi's network selection suits your stay, saving $2.99 is a reasonable choice. Access to an extra network name is not, by itself, proof of better reception.

Our 3 GB and 5 GB packs have the lowest listed fixed-data prices at those sizes in the same six-provider comparison. For a few days in Langkawi, that's why we recommend starting there. The full Malaysia price table shows the alternatives and their validity periods. Those figures exclude temporary promotions, and competitor prices are dated 26 September rather than presented as a fresh check today.

A local SIM is another sensible option if you want ordinary Malaysian calls or a large allowance. Hotlink's Travel SIM FAQ lists the Maxis Centre at Langkawi International Airport as a purchase location and includes domestic calls in its travel offer. Check its current package terms, registration requirements and opening hours before relying on airport pickup. Our eSIM is data only; internet messaging and calling apps work through data, but it doesn't provide a Malaysian phone number.

What matters for coverage in Langkawi?

The useful distinction is between a stay around the main visitor areas and a day out into mangroves, forest or smaller islands. An eSIM is handy for contacting your accommodation and arranging the next journey; you should still save tickets and meeting points before an excursion.

CelcomDigi's own Langkawi guide says its network covers the main areas reliably, while warning of limited signal in deep mangrove channels, jungle waterfalls and parts of the northeast coast. Use that distinction when planning excursions; a main-area coverage claim is not a promise of reception at every beach.

For a Pantai Cenang or Pantai Tengah stay, choose your allowance around everyday use and check coverage at the accommodation if connectivity is essential. For a quieter northern stay around Tanjung Rhu or Datai, ask your hotel which network currently works inside the rooms, especially if you plan to work. A hotel's answer about its exact location is more useful than an island-wide “5G everywhere” promise.

Our plan gives access to Maxis and CelcomDigi. That offers two listed network options, but it does not combine their speeds or guarantee an uninterrupted connection. Check the exact location using the Maxis coverage map and CelcomDigi's network checker. Maps are indicative; buildings, terrain and your phone still affect reception.

Three days at the beach or a week driving around?

Choose data for what you will do on your phone. A car hire, a boat booking and a long afternoon on the beach don't automatically require a large pack. Photo uploads, video calls and a laptop hotspot can change the calculation quickly.

Your stay A worked data budget Our starting option
Three or four days, with hotel Wi-Fi for video and backups At 0.5 GB a day, four days uses 2 GB. 3 GB / 15 days, $4.99: 1 GB spare against that example.
A week of outings and some photo sharing At 0.5 GB a day, seven days uses 3.5 GB. 5 GB / 30 days, $7.99: 1.5 GB spare against that example.
Langkawi within a two-week Malaysia trip At 0.7 GB a day, fourteen days uses 9.8 GB. Compare 10 GB plans, with little spare room at that rate.

These are planning examples, not measurements of how much Langkawi visitors use. If your own phone reports higher daily use, use that figure instead. Our Malaysia data guide goes into more detail. You can check the balance and add data to our eSIM through the web portal linked in your email.

The validity matters across a longer itinerary. If you use the plan in Kuala Lumpur before Langkawi, its days and balance continue through the island stay. For the full route, see our two-week Malaysia guide.

Get connected before you need your first pickup

If you're arriving by air, install the eSIM while you have Wi-Fi before departure. If you're arriving by ferry from the Malaysian mainland, a Malaysia eSIM already in use can stay installed for Langkawi. There is no island-specific activation step.

On arrival, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line. Keep roaming on your home line off and disable automatic data switching. Then switch off Wi-Fi for a moment and check that a page loads. Our Malaysia installation guide has the phone-specific steps.

Save your accommodation's name, address and pickup instructions before travelling. Internet access makes arranging a ride easier, but it doesn't guarantee an available driver at a remote beach later in the day. Agree the return arrangement when you book the outing.

Prepare differently for the cable car and the boats

For a SkyCab visit, save the booking confirmation and meeting details on your phone before leaving the hotel. Do the same for a Kilim mangrove tour or a trip to Dayang Bunting. You can take photos without a connection and upload them afterwards; you shouldn't need a live inbox to retrieve the booking at the meeting point.

If you are using downloaded Google Maps, check the saved area before leaving Wi-Fi. Offline driving directions are available within a downloaded area, but offline maps don't provide live traffic, public-transport, cycling or walking directions. Google explains the offline limits here. Keep any tour operator's route and pickup information separately.

Should data stop working away from the main areas, wait until you are back somewhere with known coverage before treating it as an eSIM fault. Check the selected data line, roaming and remaining balance. Manual network selection can help when an allowed network is available; it cannot produce a signal where neither partner reaches.

Going from Langkawi to Koh Lipe?

Koh Lipe is in Thailand. A Malaysia-only eSIM does not include it, even though you can travel there from Langkawi. Arrange Thai coverage before you cross and check the current ferry schedule with your operator.

If Thailand is already part of the itinerary, compare a regional plan covering both countries with separate Malaysia and Thailand eSIMs. Our Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore guide covers that decision. Check the exact pack's destinations: a Malaysia top-up adds data to the Malaysia plan, not permission to use it in Thailand.

If you're continuing to Kuala Lumpur or Penang instead, you stay within Malaysia. Keep the same eSIM and check that its allowance and expiry cover the remaining days.

Our pick for a Langkawi stay

For a short visit with Wi-Fi at your accommodation, we'd start with our 3 GB Malaysia eSIM at $4.99. For a week with more outings and uploads, 5 GB at $7.99 gives more room. Choose a bigger allowance when your usage calls for it; at 10 GB, compare Ubigi's lower price before deciding.

Install before arrival, save your excursion bookings offline and arrange Thailand coverage separately if Koh Lipe is next. Choose your Malaysia plan, or use the Malaysia guides hub to plan the rest of the trip.

Evidence note: competitor prices and networks use the 26 September comparison. Local guidance comes from the linked operators; we have not carried out a Langkawi signal survey.

Frequently asked questions

Which eSIM do you recommend for a short Langkawi stay?

We recommend Travelsim Asia’s Malaysia eSIM at 3 GB for $4.99 over 15 days, or 5 GB for $7.99 over 30 days, on Maxis and CelcomDigi. At 10 GB for 30 days, Ubigi costs less: $12 versus our $14.99, with Maxis and YTL listed. Prices in USD; competitor comparison dated 26 September 2026. You do not need a separate island eSIM.

Which networks does Travelsim Asia use in Langkawi?

Our Malaysia eSIM lists Maxis and CelcomDigi. Their coverage varies by location, building and terrain. Two listed networks do not guarantee service everywhere or combine their speeds.

How much eSIM data do I need for a week in Langkawi?

A 5 GB pack is a reasonable starting option if you budget about 0.5 GB a day and use accommodation Wi-Fi for video and backups. Seven days at that rate uses 3.5 GB. This is a planning example, not measured local usage; hotspot work and frequent video can need more.

Can I buy a local SIM at Langkawi airport?

Hotlink lists the Maxis Centre at Langkawi International Airport as a purchase location for its Travel SIM. Check current opening hours, availability and registration requirements directly. A local offer can be useful if you need ordinary Malaysian calls; our travel eSIM is data only.

Does a Langkawi or Malaysia eSIM work in Koh Lipe?

A Malaysia-only plan does not include Koh Lipe, which is in Thailand. Choose a regional pack explicitly covering both countries or arrange a separate Thailand plan before travelling. Adding data to a Malaysia-only plan does not extend its destination coverage.
