How to Install a Vietnam eSIM (Step-by-Step Guide)

Vietnam's airports are chaotic at the best of times. Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City regularly ranks among Asia's busiest — and the SIM card booths after arrivals are exactly as hectic as you'd expect. Skip the queue entirely by setting up your eSIM before you fly.

This guide covers everything: checking your phone, buying, installing, and getting online the moment your wheels touch down in Vietnam.

eSIM vs physical SIM: which is better for Vietnam?

If you've been to Vietnam before, you probably queued for a physical SIM at the airport. Here's how eSIM compares:

eSIM (Travelsim Asia) Physical SIM at airport
Where to buy ✓ Online, before you fly Airport booth after landing
Online when you land ✓ Immediately After queue + setup
Passport required ✓ No Yes (mandatory registration)
Swap out your home SIM ✓ No — runs alongside it Yes, you lose your home number
Risk of losing it ✓ None — it's digital Yes, tiny SIM cards get lost
Works across Vietnam ✓ Yes, nationwide ✓ Yes
Price ✓ Transparent, fixed online Variable, tourist markup common

Vietnam requires SIM card registration by law — airport booths will ask for your passport. eSIM skips all of that.

Why install before you fly?

  • Skip the Tan Son Nhat queue — Ho Chi Minh City's airport is consistently hectic; SIM booths add 20–40 minutes to your arrival
  • Online the moment you land — grab a Grab, check your hotel, message your contacts before you've even collected your bag
  • No passport registration at a booth — Vietnam mandates SIM registration, which means paperwork and waiting
  • 180-day activation window — buy it now, your validity only starts when you activate it in Vietnam

Before you buy: check your phone

Most phones from 2019 onwards support eSIM. Here's how to check yours before purchasing.

iPhone

iPhone XS, XR and newer all support eSIM.

Check: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. If the option appears, you're compatible.

Android

Google Pixel 3+, Samsung Galaxy S20+, and most Android flagships from 2020 onwards.

Check: Settings → Network → SIMs → Add eSIM. Menu names vary by brand.

Note: Carrier-locked phones may not support eSIM even if the hardware does. If you bought your phone on a carrier contract, check with them before purchasing.

Step 1: Purchase your Vietnam eSIM

Takes about 2 minutes. Do it weeks before your trip, the night before, or at the gate — whenever suits you.

1

Choose your plan
Pick by trip length and data needs. Unsure? Start smaller — you can top up from your portal at any time.

2

Enter your email
No account required. Your eSIM install link arrives in your inbox within minutes.

3

Check your inbox
You'll get an email with a QR code and a tap-to-install link. Keep this email — you'll need it for top-ups too.

Step 2: Install the eSIM (before you fly)

Do this at home on Wi-Fi. The eSIM installs onto your phone now, but your data allowance doesn't start until you activate it in Vietnam.

💡 Good to know: Your eSIM has a 180-day activation window. Buy it a month before your trip if you like — your 7/15/30 day validity only starts counting when you first connect to a Vietnamese network.

Two ways to install — both take under two minutes:

iPhone installation

Option A: Tap to install (easiest)

  1. Open our email on your iPhone
  2. Tap the install link
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts
  4. Label it "Vietnam" or "Travel Data"

Option B: QR code

  1. Open the QR code on another device (laptop, tablet, or print it)
  2. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code
  3. Point your camera at the QR code
  4. Follow prompts and label it

Android installation

Option A: Tap to install (easiest)

  1. Open our email on your Android
  2. Tap the install link
  3. Your phone will prompt you to add the eSIM
  4. Confirm and label it "Vietnam"

Option B: QR code

  1. Open the QR code on another device
  2. Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM
  3. Select "Scan QR code"
  4. Point camera at QR and confirm

Menu names vary by manufacturer (Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, etc.)

After installation: You'll see a new eSIM line in your phone's cellular/SIM settings. Leave it turned off for now — enable it when you land.

Step 3: Activate when you land in Vietnam

Touched down at Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai, or Da Nang? Three quick steps:

1
Turn on the Vietnam eSIM
Enable the line you installed before flying
2
Set it as your data line
This tells your phone to use it for internet
3
Turn ON data roaming
Required for travel eSIMs to work

That's it. Your validity period starts now. Signal within 30 seconds. Welcome to Vietnam — go grab a Grab while everyone else is still queuing for a SIM card.

"Wait, data roaming? Isn't that expensive?"

Not with a prepaid eSIM. The roaming toggle has a bad reputation from the old days of bill shock on carrier plans — but your Vietnam eSIM is prepaid. There's no extra charge, no surprise bill. The toggle simply tells your phone it's allowed to connect to Vietnamese networks. Without it on, the eSIM is installed but inactive.

iPhone

Settings → Cellular → [Your Vietnam eSIM] → Data Roaming → ON

Android

Settings → Network → SIMs → [Vietnam eSIM] → Roaming → ON

Checking your remaining data

Your confirmation email includes a link to your personal portal — no login required. Check your remaining data, view your expiry date, and top up if needed, all in one place.

Running low mid-trip? Top up directly from the portal — no new eSIM needed.

Troubleshooting: landed but no data?

Vietnam's networks are solid, so if you're not getting data it's almost always a settings issue. Try these in order:

  1. Check your data line setting
The most common culprit. Go to Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Mobile Network (Android) and confirm your Vietnam eSIM is selected as the data line — not your home SIM.
  2. Turn on Data Roaming
Must be ON for the Vietnam eSIM specifically. Your prepaid data won't cost extra — this toggle just allows connection to Vietnamese networks.
  3. Toggle airplane mode
Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, then off. Forces your phone to reconnect and find the network fresh.
  4. Restart your phone
A full restart clears most lingering connection issues. Takes 30 seconds and works more often than it should.

Vietnam eSIM FAQ

When does my data validity start?

When you first connect to a Vietnamese network — not when you buy or install. You can purchase up to 180 days in advance, and your 7/15/30 day countdown only begins when you land and activate.

Which airports does this work at?

Yes — Tan Son Nhat (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, Noi Bai (HAN) in Hanoi, Da Nang (DAD), Phu Quoc (PQC), Cam Ranh/Nha Trang (CXR), and all other Vietnamese airports. Coverage is strong across major cities and popular tourist destinations.

Will Grab work immediately when I land?

Yes — that's one of the main reasons to set this up before you fly. Once your eSIM activates, all your apps work normally. Order a Grab while you're still waiting at baggage claim, check your accommodation on Maps, message your contacts. No hunting for Wi-Fi first.

Will my WhatsApp number stay the same?

Yes. WhatsApp is linked to your original phone number, not your data connection. Your Vietnam eSIM just provides internet — WhatsApp, Messenger, Zalo, Telegram and other messaging apps all continue working under your existing number.

Does it include calls and texts?

No — this is a data-only eSIM with no Vietnamese phone number. For calls, use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Messenger over data. Most travellers never need a local number, but if you do (for Vietnamese app verification, etc.), you'd need a physical SIM from a local store.

Can I use it as a mobile hotspot?

Yes, tethering works on most devices. Keep in mind that it burns through data quickly — a laptop doing normal browsing uses 500MB–1GB per hour. If you're planning to work remotely from Vietnam, size up your plan accordingly.

What if I run out of data?

Top up through your portal — the link is in your confirmation email. You can add more data in a few taps without buying or reinstalling a new eSIM. Your data kicks in immediately after topping up.

I'm doing Vietnam plus other countries. Will this work elsewhere?

This eSIM is Vietnam-only. If you're doing a multi-country trip through Southeast Asia, check out our regional Asia eSIMs that cover multiple destinations on a single plan.

Do I need to register the eSIM with my passport?

No. Vietnam's SIM registration law applies to physical SIM cards sold locally — which is why airport booths ask for your passport. eSIMs purchased online from international providers don't carry the same requirement. Just buy, install, and activate.

I installed the eSIM but can't see it on my phone

Go to Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Network → SIMs (Android) and look for the new eSIM line. It may be labelled "Travel" or "Secondary" — rename it to "Vietnam" for clarity. If it genuinely isn't there, the installation may not have completed. Use the install link in your confirmation email to try again.

Ready to get connected?

Skip the Tan Son Nhat SIM queue. Buy now, install at home, activate the moment you land. You'll be online before your luggage hits the belt.

Get your Vietnam eSIM in under 5 minutes — no signup, no app, no queue.
