The Gili Islands have no mobile network of their own. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are small enough that your signal comes across the water from towers on Lombok and Bali, so the carrier your eSIM connects to decides whether you have service. One network reaches furthest across that stretch of sea: Telkomsel. Pick a plan that carries it and the Gilis work; pick one that skips it and Gili Meno in particular can drop to nothing.

Why the Gili Islands are a coverage test, not a price test
On Bali, almost any eSIM works, so people choose on price. The Gilis flip that. These three islands sit off the northwest coast of Lombok, roughly 30 to 45 minutes by fast boat from Bangsal harbour and a couple of hours from Bali. None of them has the dense local tower network a mainland town has. The signal you get on the beach is whatever the nearest mainland tower pushes across the water, and different carriers push it different distances.
That makes the Gilis one of the few places where the network behind your eSIM changes the trip. Book a boat transfer, message a dive school, or check a return schedule, and you need service at the harbour and on the island. Telkomsel holds that signal best. The gap widens on Gili Meno, the quietest and least developed of the three, where weaker networks that limp along on Trawangan can disappear entirely.

Signal on each island tracks the mainland network your provider uses. Here is how Indonesia's five carriers compare across Gili Trawangan (the largest and most developed), Gili Air (the middle option), and Gili Meno (the smallest and quietest).

Signal reaches the islands from mainland towers, so it varies with weather, boat position on the crossing, and where you stand on the island. Telkomsel carries furthest across the water on every one of the three.
The Gili Meno rule. If your itinerary includes Meno, Telkomsel stops being a nice-to-have. Trawangan has enough tourist infrastructure that XL Axiata holds up well and even weaker networks manage something. Meno is where that margin runs out. A Telkomsel-backed eSIM is the difference between a working map on Meno and hunting for a bar behind the dive shop.

Coverage on the Gilis comes down to one question you can answer before you pay: does the provider name Telkomsel among its Indonesian networks? Three do, three don't or won't say.

Travelsim Asia and Holafly are the only two providers that pair Telkomsel with XL Axiata, and Travelsim Asia adds Indosat and Smartfren on top, which is the strongest combination for the Gili Islands. Their coverage is the same because their networks are the same. The choice between them is the plan model, not the signal: Travelsim Asia sells fixed-data plans at full speed from $3.99, Holafly sells unlimited at about $4/day. Nomad also carries Telkomsel.
The picks for the Gili Islands
Coverage narrows the field to three providers. Here is when each one is the right call, including where a competitor beats us.
Travelsim Asia — best overall for most Gili trips
Good for: travelers who want the strongest Gili coverage at the lowest price with nothing to install before a flight. We connect to all four Indonesian networks, Telkomsel and XL Axiata included, on fixed plans that run at full speed the whole way through. Prices are the lowest in the Indonesia market at 1 GB ($3.99), 5 GB ($10.99), 20 GB ($27.99), and 50 GB ($36.99). The eSIM arrives by email and installs straight from the email, with no app and no account, and top-ups happen through a web portal, useful when a two-day Gili stop turns into four. Less ideal for: travelers who specifically want unlimited data, which we don't sell. This is our product, so weigh the bias.
Holafly — tied on coverage, pick it for unlimited
Good for: travelers who want unlimited data on the same Telkomsel + XL Axiata coverage and would rather not track gigabytes. If you plan to stream on the beach or video-call home every evening from Gili Air, Holafly's uncapped model (with a 90 GB/month soft cap) removes the question. Less ideal for: anyone counting cost. At about $4/day, a week runs $27.50, more than double what a Travelsim Asia 5 GB plan covers comfortably for the same trip at $10.99. Holafly also caps hotspot sharing at 1 GB/day, so it earns its price only when unlimited phone data is genuinely worth the premium to you.
Nomad — the budget Telkomsel alternative
Good for: travelers who want Telkomsel at a low price, especially on the soft-unlimited tiers at $18 / 5 days and $33 / 10 days, the cheapest "unlimited" options for Indonesia. A 5-day Gili and Lombok combo fits the $18 plan well. Less ideal for: heavy data users who hit Nomad's roughly 2 GB/day cap, after which speeds drop to 512 Kbps. That is slow enough to make map reloads and photo uploads a chore. Nomad runs Telkomsel on its own, which on the Gilis is the line that matters anyway.
Airalo, Ubigi and Saily — save these for Bali
Honest steer: all three are reasonable Indonesia eSIMs and the wrong pick for the Gili Islands. Airalo connects to 3 (Hutchison) and Indosat, Ubigi to Indosat, and Saily doesn't publish its Indonesian network at all. None of them confirms Telkomsel, which is exactly the network the Gilis depend on. They will cope on Gili Trawangan in good conditions and struggle on Meno. Buying a plan you can't confirm carries Telkomsel is a gamble you don't need to take when three providers name it openly. Keep Airalo for a multi-country regional trip, and Ubigi or Saily for a Bali or city stay.
Gili-specific things worth knowing
- Boat transfers run on messages, not timetables. Public boats from Bangsal and fast boats from Bali (Serangan, Padang Bai, Amed) confirm times by WhatsApp and change with the weather. You want reliable signal at the harbour and on the island to rebook when a crossing shifts. This is another point for Telkomsel-backed coverage, which holds furthest over the water.
- There are no cars or scooters on the Gilis. You get around on foot, by bicycle, or by cidomo pony cart. Live turn-by-turn navigation matters far less here than on Lombok, so you'll use less map data, but you'll still lean on WhatsApp and booking sites that need a connection.
- WhatsApp runs the dive schools and homestays. Dive centres, freediving schools, homestay hosts, and boat captains all coordinate over WhatsApp. Voice and video calls work well on Telkomsel. Check that your plan doesn't throttle to a speed that breaks a call before you rely on it to confirm a dive.
- WiFi is decent on Trawangan and thin on Meno. Gili Trawangan's cafés and dive shops have usable WiFi you can offload heavy tasks onto. Gili Meno has far less, so your eSIM becomes the primary connection rather than a backup. Plan a little more data if Meno is on the list.
- Snorkelling and diving mean long stretches off your phone. Much of a Gili day is spent in the water, which keeps data use low. Most travelers need less data here than a Bali city stay, so a small plan with easy top-up beats overbuying.
How much data do you need for the Gili Islands?
A Gili trip is usually light on data. Time in the water, no scooter navigation, and decent WiFi on Trawangan all keep usage down. The main drivers are WhatsApp, booking and transfer sites, and social media between snorkel sessions.

eSIM vs a local SIM for the Gilis
There are no SIM counters on the Gili Islands themselves. You'd buy a local SIM at Lombok or Bali airport before you cross, which brings the same catch as everywhere in Indonesia: a physical local SIM ties your phone to Indonesia's IMEI registry, and tourists get a 90-day grace period before the phone is blocked from local networks. A roaming eSIM connects through international agreements instead, so it skips registration completely and keeps your home number active alongside it.

The Gili Islands filter eSIMs harder than Bali does, and the filter is one network. If your plan carries Telkomsel, you'll have signal on Trawangan, Air, and even Meno, plus the best odds of a connection on the boat over. If it doesn't, you'll spend the trip chasing bars.
