A regional eSIM gives you one balance to use across its included destinations. Separate country plans give each stop its own allowance and expiry date. Either can cost less, depending on the route and the amount of data you buy.
The examples below use Travelsim Asia plans unless another provider is named. We sell these products. Each comparison states the allowance and validity so you can see what the price buys.
Japan and Korea: the answer changes with your allowance

Both rows compare the same total data, but separate balances cannot move between countries. A shared allowance is useful when you expect to use more data at one stop and do not know which one yet. Separate plans are easier to justify when your split is predictable.

Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore: compare equal budgets

These rows deliberately show different totals where our available sizes do not match exactly. The first separate combination has 15 days in Malaysia, 30 in Thailand and 7 in Singapore. The second gives 30 days for each country. A lower sticker price is not a fair saving if the plan expires before you leave.
For this three-country route, the dedicated regional pack covers every stop. Asia 14 does not include Singapore, despite having a larger destination count.
Mainland China and Hong Kong: two stops or three?
For a trip using 5 GB in mainland China and 5 GB in Hong Kong, our separate plans total $18.98, each valid for 30 days. The shared China–Hong Kong–Macau 10 GB plan costs $24.99. Separate plans cost less for that two-stop budget. They do not cover Macau; the regional plan includes it.
Validity and networks can decide the choice
The regional plans compared here start on first connection in any covered destination. If your home country is included, connecting before departure starts the clock. A regional plan’s days continue through every stop; separate country plans start separately when used in their respective destinations.
Check networks for the exact product, too. Our Asia 14 pack lists KDDI/au and SoftBank in Japan. The single-country Japan plan also lists docomo and Rakuten. Neither a larger country count nor the same provider name guarantees the same network selection.
Choose for the trip you are actually taking
Write down your destinations, days at each stop and expected data split. Compare the full cost for that itinerary. Choose a regional plan when shared data and one installation justify its price; choose separate plans when their savings or network selection suit you better.
